Jocelyne Alloucherie: So Far, So Near…

An Offering

I have created only one landscape, yet it’s always different. It’s the landscape of an absence. This absence corresponds to our desire to identify a place while maintaining an open gaze that never quite settles, remaining in tension between two or more understandings of the image and of the object.

The freedom to move from the very heavy to the very light is achieved through photographic means pushed nearly to the point of vanishing, appearing like a breath upon a floating surface or on broadly cut-out volumes. When the sand appears to settle heavily upon the horizontal ground, it brings us back, in a vertical configuration, to a drawing resting at the very bottom of the composition suggesting the descent from an imaginary summit.

From near to far, one can peruse a range of directly evoked views through personal memory of places and things; we are inside a space that remains vast and imprecise. This is a zone without boundaries.

Like shadow and clouds, sand remains faithful to no immutable form; without a fixed substrate, without defined contours, moving from a luminous patch to an unstable or obscure mass; from a temporality flowing toward a becoming that is never definitive, through an infinite succession of ephemeral states that can, at best, be suspended by a digital capture.

One artistic ambition, however, dominates this offering: in the end, only the memory of peaceful and quiet moments will remain, like the aftermath of a storm, when in puddles, images resembling “clouds in a box,” …far away essences translated into a fiction of proximity…. are transformed into perceptible objects.

The artist wishes to thank PhotoSynthèse and its director, Miryam Tremblay, for their expertise in producing these works, which may initially appear quite simple but require considerable technical knowledge and ingenuity.

Other, earlier works, will be on view at the artist’s studio during the exhibition, on Fridays and Saturdays between 5 and 7 p.m.. For this, please make an appointment: info@bellemarelambert.com
