The Scale of Things brings together works by artists Jérôme Bouchard and Mathieu Gaudet. Both visual artists, they put in dialogue joint interests for the modulation of the visual perception, the processes of extraction, or the relation to the body to the movement. The works in this exhibition were first presented in the fall of 2018 at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo.
With this joint proposal, both Jérôme Bouchard and Mathieu Gaudet are playing on perception. The relation to the body is equally significant in the materiality of the works as in the manner of approaching them. If they can seem static at first, it is in the movement in space that they reveal themselves. By reversing our gaze, by shifting the notions of back and place, and by making us move to understand, Gaudet and Bouchard confuse our understanding of scales. And yet, it is not a question here of simply varying formats, but rather of resorting to complex operating procedures. In their making, the works must undergo eliminations and material transformations: to speak of the indefinable, it is necessary to create some.
